Dr. Brad Bruns: ABJ’s Healthcare Hero!

Dr. Bruns Phoenix Business Journal

The team at Arizona Bone & Joint Specialists would like to congratulate Dr. Brad Bruns for winning Phoenix Business Journal's Healthcare Heroes Award under the "Physician" category! This program honors individuals in the healthcare industry for exemplary performance in their given field. We are so proud of Dr. Bruns and his accomplishments! If you’re unfamiliar with Dr. Bruns' work and medical specialty, allow us to reintroduce him!

Dr. Brad Bruns is board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, orthopedic trauma, and arthritis surgery. He has been practicing orthopedics in the Valley since 1985. Dr. Bruns has served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at both John C. Lincoln North Mountain and Paradise Valley Hospitals and has been a member of the Board of Directors for OrthoArizona since its inception.

He has always been involved in youth sports, having worked as the team physician for Cactus Shadows High School and North Canyon High School. In addition to serving youth teams, Dr. Bruns has volunteered his time for numerous sports teams, including the AAA Oklahoma City 89ers baseball team, Phoenix Roadrunners hockey team, Arizona State Hockey Club, the Justin Sports Medicine team with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and the Chaparral High School Lacrosse club.

When asked who his personal health care hero was, Dr. Bruns responded with, “Sir John Charnley, CBE, FRS, the innovator and original orthopedic surgeon of today's hip replacement surgery, which has improved so many people's lives. Some modifications have been made, but his basic concept is the same from his original designs in the 1950's! As one of the most common procedures done in orthopedics today, his work has improved patient's everyday activities without pain.”

When he’s not treating patients, Dr. Bruns enjoys supporting numerous non-profit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, and Boy Scouts of America. When asked at what point did he value serving the underserved, Dr. Bruns responded with, “Very shortly after I started working as an orthopedic surgeon, I was lucky to have a General Surgeon, Dr. Jim Magary, who recruited me to go to Bolivia and help the underserved. I have never regretted the decision to go with him to Bolivia.”

“Initially, I spent 3 years in Trinidad, Bolivia, for general orthopedic conditions. In the past 15+ years, we have gone to Santiago, Dominican Republic, annually for a variety of orthopedic issues. Luckily, in the past 6 years, with the generosity of Zimmer/Biomet - we have been able to perform total knee and hip arthroplasties to patients in these areas.”

Thank you, Dr. Bruns, for being Arizona Bone & Joint Specialists' unsung healthcare hero!
