Dr. Richard Martin is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. After breaking his back at a young age and falling under the care of a local orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Martin developed an interest in sports medicine and post injury rehabilitation. As such, he eventually pursued a career in orthopedic surgery. After earning his medical degree at the University of Illinois, he went on to complete his orthopedic surgical residency at the prestigious Henry Ford Hospital.
Dr. Martin has had the honor of working with many respected physicians throughout his career. He completed his fellowship training under Dr. J.R. Steadman of the world-renowned Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. During his time at the clinic, Dr. Martin honed his skills in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery and developed a strong, patient-centric treatment approach. From premier, multi-million dollar athletes to normal, hardworking citizens, Dr. Steadman cared for each patient based on their needs, not their means. This is a principle Dr. Martin applies to his own practice today.
Dr. Martin has served as a team physician for multiple local high schools and professional sports teams, including the Paradise Valley School District, Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Redwings. He is dedicated to the advancement of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine and is published in several medical journals for topics pertaining to his specialty.
Currently, Dr. Martin is researching the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of golf injuries. Part of his research includes looking at the physiological demands of an efficient golf swing and golf injuries as they relate to muscular imbalance and poor technique.
Dr. Martin has been a recurrent recipient of the prestigious "Top Doc" title in the Phoenix Magazine publication of the same name. He feels very fortunate to have been involved with Arizona Bone and Joint Specialists since its early beginnings, and he is dedicated to serving the population of Arizona with the best orthopedic care available.
Dr. Martin and his wife are the proud parents of 18-year-old triplets and a 16-year-old singleton. He and his family are involved in various charities throughout the Valley, such as Board of Visitors, National Charity League, and Mother’s Grace. In his spare time, Dr. Martin likes to golf, mountain bike, ski, and hike.
