About Dr. Gulbrandsen
Dr. Matthew Gulbrandsen is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in the treatment of sports injuries and conditions affecting the shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, foot, wrist, and hand. He completed advanced fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Mayo Clinic and provides comprehensive care for athletes and active individuals of all ages. Dr. Gulbrandsen’s goal is to help patients recover from injury, restore function, and safely return to the activities they enjoy.
Originally from Arizona, Dr. Gulbrandsen attended Mountain View High School in Mesa, where he earned first-team all-state honors in football and pursued a collegiate football career at Brigham Young University. However, his own athletic career was cut short by injury.
As an athlete, Dr. Gulbrandsen underwent shoulder, ankle, and hip surgeries. He developed a firsthand understanding of the physical and emotional challenges of recovery. He is passionate about helping individuals return to the sports, work, and everyday activities they love.
Dr. Gulbrandsen understands the importance of patient education and believes that informed patients make the best decisions about their care. He takes the time to listen to each patient's goals, explain all available treatment options, and develop personalized care plans tailored to their individual needs. Whether treatment involves nonsurgical therapies or advanced surgical techniques, his priority is helping patients achieve the best possible outcome.
Dr. Gulbrandsen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Outside of work, Dr. Gulbrandsen enjoys spending time with his wife and five children, following local sports teams, and staying active. Dr. Gulbrandsen is fluent in English and Spanish.
