What Is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures, which occur when one or more of the bones in the spine weaken and collapse. These fractures are commonly associated with osteoporosis but may also result from an injury or certain underlying conditions.

A compression fracture can cause sudden or worsening back pain, limited mobility, and changes in posture. Kyphoplasty is designed to stabilize the affected vertebra, help prevent further collapse, and reduce pain related to the fracture.

The Kyphoplasty Procedure

Kyphoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using imaging guidance. During the procedure, your doctor guides a small instrument into the fractured vertebra through a small puncture in the skin. A specialized balloon is then carefully inflated within the vertebra to create space and may help restore some of the vertebra's height.

Once the balloon is removed, the space is filled with medical-grade bone cement. The cement hardens quickly to stabilize the fractured vertebra and provide support.

Patients typically return home the same day. Your doctor will provide specific instructions for activity and recovery based on your individual needs.

Is Kyphoplasty Right for You?

Kyphoplasty may be considered for patients experiencing pain from a vertebral compression fracture, particularly when symptoms interfere with mobility and everyday activities. These fractures may be associated with:

Osteoporosis or weakened bones
Spinal injury
Certain spinal tumors or other underlying conditions
Persistent or worsening back pain related to a compression fracture
